Assistant Professor of Sociology Abdul-Malak has focused her research on grandparents caring for their grandchildren with disabilities. In the recently released book Grandparenting Children with Disabilities, Abdul-Malak and her coauthor interviewed 50 grandparents 鈥渢o see how having grandchildren with disabilities affects grandparenting itself,鈥 Abdul-Malak says.
Professor of Sociology and Women鈥檚 Studies Meika Loe鈥檚 research has focused on the commonalities between older and younger generations, as found during her class titled Sociology of the Life Course, which paired students with local elders. In Loe鈥檚 2011 book, Aging Our Way: Lessons for Living from 85 and Beyond, she interviewed 30 elders about creating meaning and purpose as they lived on their own. In addition, Professor Loe, Ariel Sherry 鈥15, and Evan Chartier 鈥14 coauthored a chapter titled 鈥淎geism: Stereotypes, Causes, Effects, and Counter-Movements鈥 in the textbook Gerontology: Changes, Challenges, and Solutions (Praeger, 2016).
